Phelan Gas Company FAQ

Where does propane come from?

Propane exists either as a by-product of refining gasoline from crude oil or it is extracted from natural gas. Close to 90% of the propane used in the United States is produced in the United States.

Why does propane smell so bad?

Propane in its natural state is odorless. An odorant called ethyl mercaptan is added to the fuel after it is produced which allows for its detection. The odorization of propane permits the early detection of leaks.

Why isn't my tank filled to 100% capacity?

Propane expands as the temperature warms. Propane tanks are filled only to 80%-85% capacity. This is standard practice in the propane industry.

Can you fill a tank that I rent from another company?

No, unfortunately State law prohibits one company from filling a tank belonging to another company. We can only fill tanks leased from Phelan Gas or customer owned tanks. However, if you have another company's tank and are looking to switch, we could conveniently add you to our schedule and set one of our tanks at your property. Simply call our office at 760-868-9300 for more details.

How do I know what tank size I need?

When you contact our office, we will ask you what appliances in the home will be using propane. Additionally, we may ask a few more questions, such as BTU's for your appliances or square footage of the home. From this, we will choose a tank size that will suit your needs and our delivery schedule to ensure that you and your family never run out of propane.

I think I have a leak. What do I do?

If you think you have a propane leak, immediately leave the area where you smell propane and call your propane provider if safe to do so. If you feel there is eminent danger to life or property, call 911 immediately. If you don’t feel the leak is life or property threatening it is still important to proceed with caution as even a small leak can be dangerous. Always consult with a professional when dealing with propane leaks. A simple and safe way to determine if you have a leak is to have a leak test performed by a qualified technician. Either a certified, licensed plumber or one of our technicians can test your gas system. Charges may apply.

What are my delivery options?

We offer both a FILL MONTHLY and a WILL CALL option for delivery.

Monthly customers will receive a call the day prior to delivery and we will keep the tank full each month.

Will Call customers are responsible for monitoring the gauge on the tank.

If you are a will call, or call ahead, customer you should request a delivery when your tank reaches 30% to allow ample time for a delivery. If an emergency or expedited delivery is required, additional fees may apply. You can request a delivery online or by contacting our local office.
